How to Build a Makeup Starter Kit Under $20 -PLUS tips for beginners!

Do you have absolutely no makeup or no idea where to start with what little you already have? I have gathered together a low-cost plan to get you started with the essentials and tips and tricks for beginners to use them easily. After browsing through this post, run over to a target with a twenty and then get to practicing!

$3.00 e.l.f. Studio Powder Brush
While these brushes were designed for brushing off excess powder off the skin, This is perfect for blending liquid foundation in a hurry! Place a a couple spaced out dots of your foundation on each area of your face. Take a flat-topped powder brush and in upward circular motions blend the foundation in. This will spread it in evenly and give you a nice coverage. (If you feel you have an awesome glowing complexion feel free to skip the purchase for this brush and the foundation -the less makeup layers the better the look will turn out.)

$3.99 Wet n Wild CoverAll Cream Foundation
Everyone has different skin needs, but over all liquid foundations when applied correctly, can look the most flawless. A foundation's purpose is to subtlety mute the discoloration and flaws in the complexion creating a neutral canvas so that the main facial features become the emphasized focus. It will tone down redness be it from the sensitive area just around the nose, the stressed our skin around pimples, the purplish tone scarring from acne past, under-eye blueness or brownness. Once applied, the face should look a little more pale than without foundation. The discoloration flaws tend to overall darken the face so your true skin tone is actually brighter. Also, we have covered up our natural healthy redness in the places such as cheeks, so it should look strange until blush is applied to bring back the life in the right areas.

$1.00 e.l.f. Essential Blushing, Bronzing and Blending Brush
Most blushes you can buy will come with a short handled stiff brush. DO NOT USE IT. I guarantee you will accidentally apply the blush too heavily, will be unable to blend it in softly and be very frustrated. The longer the handle, the lighter the application. Buy a simple Blush Brush like this one from e.l.f. for starters, until you get the hang of where the blush is most attractive on your face shape and how you like to apply it -then purchase a specific kind based on your needs. With this kind of brush you will need to apply the blush lightly and build up to the color and deepness that you desire. Imagine a horizontal line under your nose, no blush should ever be applied in that area.

$2.00 e.l.f. Essential Blush with Brush in the shade "blushing"
Like I said before -toss that brush! Blush should bring back color to your face that you neutralized with foundation, but placing it only in the most flattering places. For my face shape, I can apply color to the highs of my outer cheekbones AND directly above on my temples almost mirroring the shape on my outer edges of my forehead. The key to giving yourself a sun-kissed warmth and not porcelain doll circles is to BLEND, BLEND AND BLEND SOME MORE.

$1.00 e.l.f. Essential Eyelid Primer
This is an optional purchase, but highly recommended to prevent eyeshadows from melting into your crease throughout the day. Eye primers create an oil-proof barrier between your skin and the shadow. This not only allows the shadow to stick on longer, but it helps the color come across less sheer and more vibrant like it looks in the pallet. Best when blended in with your finger and then let it dry before doing your eyeshadow.

$2.00 e.l.f. Essential Flawless Eyeshadow Quad in "Golden Godess"
For your first eyeshadow purchase, I advise getting ANY low priced eyeshadow pallet with at least these colors to work with: deep brown, a medium warm brown (that is darker than your skin tone) and a shimmery champagne. Use the medium brown for the outer corner of your eyelid and your crease. Use the shimmery champagne to highlight your inner corners and a small amount under the arch of your brow. Use the deepest shade very lightly in the middle of your outer-most edge of your crease. Blend all of these together and reapply the medium shade as needed. Then use the deep brown as an eyeliner for top and bottom. This creates a simple polished everyday look that can be worn on every eye color.

$1.00 e.l.f. Essential Blending Eye Brush
This is great for applying eyeshadow, and perfect for getting beautifully blended colors. The trick to getting by with just one brush for eye shadow, is to swirl in it the palm of your hand to empty out all the eyeshadow pigment before you pick up a different color onto the brush. Once you've applied all the colors in the different areas of your eyelid, you can blend them in alternating circular motions to get that professionally smooth look.

$1.00 e.l.f. Essential Eyeliner Brush
Using a dark brown or black eyeshadow applied with an angled or flat brush instead of a eyeliner pencil or liquid liner, creates an easy and soft natural looking defined eye. This technique is less likely for a beginner to make a mistake, and if you do, it's easy to just keep swiping the brush along the line until it's smooth. Plus, using an eyeshadow as an eyeliner prevents you from having to buy extra makeup. When you are buying all of your makeup for the first time all at once, it can add up fast.

$1.99 Wet n Wild MegaSlicks Lip Gloss, Strawberry Ice
A neutral sheer pink gloss is flattering on every complexion. Try this MegaSlicks in strawberry Ice to start.

$1.00 e.l.f. Essential Regular & Waterproof Mascara Duo
Just like the hair on our head, everyone's has different tendencies. I can't recommend a holy grail mascara that is guaranteed to work on short curly, stick strait, sparse, or long twisting lashes. This will be an ongoing journey of trial an error between finding the right consistency, the right wand type, and the one that doesn't clump or flake or dry out your lashes (which causes them to break!). If you want fuller and thicker lashes you will need a drier consistency with a bristle wand, and if you want longer lashes go for the rubbery close together wand. If your lashes are hard to curl (purchase an elf eyelash curler for $1) use a waterproof mascara to help hold the shape. Don't assume that "more expensive" means "better quality" -it's not the case it the hyped up world of mascara!

I hope this Makeup Starter kit and tips for beginners helps you dive into the beautiful world of makeup without buying a bunch of products that you can't get to work for you.
